Dental Crowns & Porcelain Crowns
What is a Dental Crown or Tooth Crown ?
Dental crowns are used to replace a chipped, decayed, broken, misaligned, or a discolored tooth. Also referred to as a dental "cap" a crown fits on top of, and covers the damaged tooth.
How long does a Dental Crown Last ?
A new crown can last ten years or longer depending on how well it is taken care of and if it is exposed to excessive chewing, biting, accidental trauma or tooth grinding.
Why would a Dental Crown need to be replaced ?
Your crown may have to be replaced if :
-
tooth decay has accumulated at the edge
-
if it has been broken or cracked
-
if the edge has become greyed at the gum line where the gum has receded
-
if it doesn't match it's neighboring teeth as they naturaly begin to stain or darken (another way to fix this problem may be to try tooth whitening to match the crown's appearance)
What is a porcelain dental crown ?
Dental crowns can be made from many kinds of metal including gold and other metal alloys, ceramic materials including porcelain, or a combination of both of these. Porcelain or "dental ceramic" is very life-like in appearance and has a translucency that makes it the most cosmetically pleasing of all of the many types of crowns available.
